Joyce Rutherford Oral History

Video directed by Graham Mason © Storm King Art Center, 2018

Many of the buildings on Storm King’s grounds were homes before they served as workspaces. Over the course of four decades, architect Joyce Rutherford transformed these interiors into functional work spaces for the growing staff. Working together with her husband, William Rutherford, Storm King’s landscape architect, the Rutherfords reshaped the indoor and outdoor space of Storm King, leaving a visible legacy. In this interview, she revisits some of her architectural drawings, and describes working closely with her husband as they took on varied projects at the Art Center.
