After a long day in his sculpture workshop, David Smith would retire to his drawing studio to engage in the more immediate process of making drawings and paintings. The large paintings in the background of Dan Budnik’s photograph, known as sprays, reflect Smith’s collage-like process of arranging his sculptures on white rectangles which he painted directly on the floor. Using industrial and organic materials that he found around him, Smith created the sprays by placing these objects on sheets of white paper and canvas, spraying them with aerosol paint, then removing each element to reveal their silhouettes. Free from the physical constraints of sculpture, these layered compositions nonetheless allowed Smith to explore the dynamics of volume and space throughout his work.
