Gift of the Ralph E. Ogden Foundation
Soon after David Smith’s death in 1965, Storm King cofounder Ralph E. Ogden traveled to Smith’s home and studio in Bolton Landing, New York. He was struck by the way that Smith had arranged his sculptures in the landscape and purchased thirteen works for Storm King. Several are on view just outside the Museum Building, including Study in Arcs (ca. 1957), seen here in the foreground of Dan Budnik’s photograph, while five are installed throughout this gallery. Concern for a work’s relationship to the natural environment was central to Smith’s practice, and the acquisition of his work was instrumental in moving the focus of Storm King’s collection outdoors, solidifying the museum’s commitment to exploring the relationship between art and nature.
