In this work, Gomes binds textiles, plastic, and metal into a small, creature-like form—a tactile archive of material transformation. The compact work comprises fabrics stitched and layered over wood-like skin. Found objects, including a metal amulet embossed with the likeness of an Egyptian pharaoh and a heart-shaped resin ring, suggest an unseen person’s treasured belongings. Gomes’s use of materials calls to mind an Afro-Brazilian belief that wrapped objects carry spiritual potency—vessels for memory and protection.
