Joel Shapiro Oral History
Video directed by Graham Mason © Storm King Art Center, 2018
Joel Shapiro’s untitled sculpture, sited at Storm King in 2016, activates the space it inhabits and encourages viewers to experience it from all angles. The work was originally commissioned by the Sony Corporation of America for the lobby of their former headquarters on Madison Avenue in Manhattan, and was installed there in 1995. In this interview, Shapiro discusses the “liberation” of his sculpture from its indoor location to the outdoor context at Storm King. He also discusses the installation of large-scale sculpture more generally, and his use of small-scale models to experiment with sculptural form.
