The Fields of David Smith is a three-year project co-curated by David Collens and Candida Smith. This is the first major American museum exhibition devoted to Smith's work in over fifteen years, and the first that attempts to recreate the experience of the sculptures placed outside Smith's home and studio at Bolton Landing in another place.
The exhibition commemorates the thirtieth anniversary of Storm King Art Center's purchase of thirteen important sculptures from Smith's estate. From that defining moment, according to H. Peter Stern, Chairman of the Art Center, "Bolton Landing became in many ways an inspiration for the museum and sculpture park created at Storm King Art Center," setting the Art Center on its course to its present position as America's leading museum of outdoor sculpture.
