Quando o sol nascer azul is a celestial tapestry composed of a cascade of fabrics and other materials—delicate Renascença and Richelieu lace, thick cottons, and metallic fragments—gathered into a rosette at the center of the work. The work's title, drawn from a Brazilian folk saying that translates as “When the sun rises in blue,” evokes an impossible yet longed-for moment of transformation, where the unimaginable becomes tangible.

Gomes's material choices are deeply symbolic. The intricate lacework, historically tied to European luxury and colonial trade, is interwoven with more quotidian textiles. The acrylic and metal fragments catch light like scattered stars, while the nylon threads—stretched, knotted, and visibly frayed—speak to the labor of repair. This tension between fragility and endurance embodies the Afro-Brazilian concept of banzo (melancholic longing), which is transformed into hope through creative acts.

Gomes treats cloth as a living archive: some fabrics bear the marks of previous use (stitch holes, faded patterns), while others appear freshly altered. This palimpsest of textures invites touch, though the work remains just out of reach—a metaphor for the elusive nature of the titular promise.
