Together: Midnight shares a similar title, form, and tonality with Shechet’s large-scale work Midnight (2024), located in the distance yet prominent in the landscape due to its warm pink and orange palette. Shechet has described the process of creating the outdoor works as “working through translation, taking this material that is flexible and mushy, and translating it to something that is flat and hard.” It was important to Shechet that this was not a strictly one-to-one translation, leading the artist to rework the forms and colors to best suit the particularities of her new scale and material, forming related but distinct abstract language.
