John Knight’s 87° is precisely site specific. Usually installed on Storm King’s Museum Hill, it comprises a telescope—similar to those used by tourists at scenic overlooks—and the view through the telescope’s lens. When directed toward the eighty-seven degrees of the work’s title, the device focuses in on a rounded steel water tower, erected by the former Star Expansion Company in 1958, just south of Storm King’s property. In prioritizing this viewpoint, Knight conceptually connects Storm King’s pastoral hills with the industrial production just beyond them. Star Expansion Company, which manufactured industrial fasteners, was owned by the family that founded Storm King. The tower’s sleek design was a purposeful aesthetic choice by the company and was created at great expense—suggesting yet another connection between industry and artistry, as highlighted by 87°.
