John Stern Oral History

Video directed by Graham Mason © Storm King Art Center, 2018

Storm King Art Center was founded in 1960 by John Stern’s maternal grandfather, Ralph E. Ogden, and his father, H. Peter Stern, who served as President of Storm King until stepping down in 2008. John Stern succeeded his father as President just as Storm King was preparing for its fiftieth anniversary, which was celebrated in 2010–11. In this multi-session interview, Stern recalls stepping away from his law career to begin his presidency and reflects on getting re-acquainted with Storm King through planning exhibitions and programming for the fiftieth anniversary. He also describes developing his vision for Storm King and his early focus on improved visitor amenities, dynamic programming, and establishing a wider awareness of Storm King as an outdoor art museum open to the public.
